Originally established as a division of Michigan Tool, marking the beginning of our legacy in precision tooling.
1954
Purchased by Ex-Cell-O Corporation, expanding its capabilities and industry reach.
1986
Acquired by Textron, a move that strengthened operations and positioned the company for future growth.
1993
Became Colonial Tool, evolving into a dedicated manufacturer under private ownership.
1997
Acquired Val-U-Tool, a custom gage builder in Michigan, extending our specialized capabilities.
2007
Acquired Advanced Cutting Tool Systems Inc., further enhancing our offering in advanced tooling solutions.
Present day
Now operating as Colonial Tool Group Inc., the company is known globally for innovation in precision spindles, broach tools and special machines, spline rolling racks, and custom cutting tools. Colonial's innovative spirit has continued throughout our history. Colonial has been awarded several US and International Patents on its products and processes throughout the years.

Adjustable preload spindle

US Patent #6,042,273

One of our unique features to our modular spindles. The Adjustable Preload spindles helps our customers commonize on our spindles, through engine manufacturing plants, reducing the need for excessive spare spindles; this spindle can be used in a variety of applications and configurations. The cost savings to our customers—in using this spindle—has been as high as $500,000 at one plant alone.

High Speed Spindle with Adjustable Tool

US Patent #4,867,619

The High Speed Spindle with Adjustable Tool was developed with a motorized spindle: to reduce complexity of separate components it has the features necessary for our customers to produce rounder holes and straighter holes. These units have proven to achieve cylindricity of parts within a few microns, and increased tool life—as much a three times the expected levels.
